Personal
development through liberal education
The University, first of all, lays a heavy
emphasis on liberal education. It aims to
bring each student to an awareness of current
problems, to awake in him a desire to aid
in their solution, and above all to give
him the enlarged perspective that comes
from an understanding of the social, scientific,
technological, literary, religious, and
philosophical traditions-i.e. the cultural
heritage of mankind.
This emphasis on liberal education is ultimately
aimed at helping students to attain intellectual
abilities, skills, and lofty standards of
behavior, which are all essential to the
education and moral progress of every individual.
It is estimated that instruments to such
personal development are abilities and skills
in reasoning, critical judgment, communication,
good habits of study and of independent
investigation, and abilities of sound judgment
in matters of social responsibility.
Special and professional
education
Another prime emphasizes given on providing
opportunities for training students in technological
and professional fields. To serve the needs
of the nation and the welfare of its people,
the University offers a variety of curricula
and training activities for those who desire
and are capable of professional attainment.
Education in professions is also intended
to augment the general education described
in the preceding paragraph as well as to
equip the student for a professional career.
Scholarship and
research
A further emphasis is laid on efforts to
make a contribution to the total body of
knowledge through original investigation
and creative research. Also recognized is
the special moral obligation of the University
community to give special concern to the
specific major problems of Korea. To these
ends the University encourages its students
and faculty to engage in research, scholarship,
and creative activities by providing facilities
in an atmosphere conductive to achievements.
The findings of research and creative activities
are made available to the public through
publications, public forums, and performances.
Social contribution
Cultural programs' technological aids to
the community and adult education: By sponsoring
exhibits, lectures, forums, and a variety
of artistic and musical performances on
and off its campuses, the University seeks
to make a significant contribution to the
cultural life of Korea.
Contribution of the University to technological
aids to the community is highly acclaimed.
Especially worthy of mention are the truly
nation-wide contribution of Seoul National
University Hospital to the health of the
people and that of the Agricultural Experiment
Station to the agricultural production of
the nation.
Even though adult education is not of its
main aims, the University offers a variety
of programs for educating adults which are
acclaimed to be high quality and high level
courses in the country. Some such programs
include Advanced Center for Administrative
Development program at the Graduate School
of Public Administration, Advanced Management
Program of the College of Business Administration,
Educational Administrator's Training Program
and Inservice Teachers Training Program
of the College of Education, and Medical
Teacher Training Program of the College
of Medicine. The University was also instrumental
in founding the Korea Air and Correspondence
University which still relies very heavily
on the University for the major portion
of its scholarly brains and teaching staff.
Contribution of the University to the Korean
society is so numerous and varied that a
complete listing is beyond the scope of
